Next to air, the smartphone has become the next –can’t-do-without thing for young people. So says a survey conducted by research and insights firm Nielsen.

The company conducted a survey of 20,000 US mobile users and found that smartphone usage is heaviest (unsurprisingly) among the young wealthy people in the country. But the use is so pervasive among young people that even the poorer ones can’t do without them. The study found that people on an average salary $15,000 still made the sacrifice to buy a smartphone.

Among 25-34 year olds, a whopping 43% of people earning less than $15,000 a year thought it absolutely necessary to splash out on a smartphone. Age it seems comes with a grace and lots of wisdom because most people over 45 who responded as earning less than $15,000 a year did not own a smartphone. In other words, older folk have their priorities in order—no sense in being able to talk if you can’t eat, or breathe even.

The study shows something indirectly I suppose, and that is the fact that young people are very susceptible to smart advertising. The sort of advertising that made millions of Americans spend money that they didn’t have. Today, among young people, owning a smartphone is part and parcel of calling yourself ‘hip’, and that, is all down to marketing.

Are young people slaves to marketing and advertising companies? Let us know below.
